The PTE Practice Platform is built on deep research of how each question type is scored in order to create the best simulation to support test takers' preparation. In other words, we use the same grading elements that Pearson uses to evaluate your skills to offer feedback. On top of that, we utilise technology from Microsoft and Open AI in addition to supportive self-study features to boost users’ efficiency and productivity.
In the Pearson Test of English, there are two (02) types of scoring: Correct or Incorrect and Partial Credit. We will also let you know which type of scoring is applied to which question type, but for details on how each question type is scored, please check this article: “PTE grading elements and how questions are scored”.
Let’s explore each question type, how they are scored and the feedback you will get while practicing on the PTE Practice Platform.
Part 1: Speaking and Writing
1. Read Aloud
Type of scoring for both: Partial Credit
Read Aloud has the following grading elements: Content, Oral Fluency and Pronunciation.
After practising and submitting answers, users receive the following feedback.
All grading elements are graded similarly to the certified test, especially Pronunciation which users are able to learn from their mistakes – low-scored words and improve them later. Black words are good, Orange words are average, and Red words are bad. Test-takers click the yellow “Detail” buttons to check detailed phoneme scores.
2. Repeat Sentence
Type of scoring: Partial Credit
Similar to Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence also has three grading elements: Content, Oral fluency, and Pronunciation.
Nevertheless, because Repeat Sentence has a much shorter text compared to Read Aloud, so we only focus on the Content grading element to keep the Premium account affordable to everyone. Regarding Oral fluency and Pronunciation, PTE takers simply listen to our sample answer and imitate it, which is easier and more effective. On top of that, if you want to check your pronunciation, let's go practice other Speaking item types including Describe Image and Retell Lecture because we have the same grading elements as Pearson.
This is sample feedback after submitting your answers.
3. Describe the Image and Re-tell Lecture
Type of scoring for both: Partial Credit
Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture are graded based on Content, Oral Fluency and Pronunciation. The Content grading element here is completely different from the Content grading element of Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence, so make sure to read the article PTE grading elements and how questions are scored carefully.
Here is your feedback after submitting answers.
In this feedback, test-takers know whether their answers are related to the question (Image or Lecture) or not. Besides, they also receive detailed Oral Fluency feedback in addition to Pronunciation.
Any question type has detailed Pronunciation feedback that users can click the "Detail" button to check phoneme scores as in the above image.
